How to design a kitchen that works for you

The secret to a stunning, well-organised kitchen is all in the planning.  While it’s tempting to jump straight into paint colours and finishes, getting your layout right takes time.  It can make or break your kitchen so take the time to plan, measure and reflect before jumping in.

And don’t forget the most important aspect – you! You’re the one that needs to use it, so make sure your layout is right for you.

Here are some of our top tips to get you started on your kitchen design:

  • Consider the golden triangle

Developed in the early 20th century, the golden triangle is a theory that states a kitchen’s three main work areas should form a triangle. Specifically, the sink, the refrigerator and the stove all forming points of a triangle.

Today this theory is still used in planning. If some of the main work areas are too close or too far it can cause a bottleneck or make it hard to move around your kitchen seamlessly.

  • Visualise how you’ll use the space

Physically put yourself in your kitchen and visualise how you’d move around if you moved the dishwasher, or extended the bench, installed an island bench or created more storage space.

It might even help to mark out some objects and extensions on the floor with tape.

  • Decide on your layout

U- and L-shaped kitchens are the most common layouts used in kitchens today.

However single wall and gallery kitchens can work in smaller spaces too.

If you can fit in a kitchen island this will also help you open up more stage, seating and counter space without redesigning too much.
